Miss Universe is an annual international beauty contest run by the Miss Universe Organization. Along with its rival contests - Miss World and Miss Earth - this pageant is one of the most publicized beauty contests in the world.
The contest was founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills. The pageant became part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf and Western Industries, before being acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.
In 1998, Miss Universe changed its name from Miss Universe, Inc. to Miss Universe Organization and The headquarters moved from Long Beach, Los Angeles to New York City that year. Donald Trump brought in a new team of professionals to the contest headed by its new CEO, Molly Miles, and president Maureen Reidy. Miles coined the slogan "Redefined for Today" for promotion of the pageants. That year, the new Miss Universe logo was born: The Woman with the Stars, which is still used today.
The current Miss Universe is Stefania Fernandez, from Venezuela. She won the title on August 23, 2009. The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, congratulated Stefania, and he gave her his support against AIDS. He also gave his government's support [10]. After, she was in "Infant Orthopedic Hospital" of Venezuela. In October she traveled to Jakarta, Bandung[11] and Medan[12], in Indonesia where she crowned the Indonesian representative for the Miss Universe 2010 pageant [13]. In November she traveled again to Indonesia, specifically to the Bali island, when she filmed a commercial of vitamins. On her return to New York, she was in a press conference about HIV tested, sharing with Ban Ki-moon, president of the United Nations Organization and with the recognized Venezuelan fashion designer Carolina Herrera. On November 5, 2009 serves as a presenter at Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, USA, sharing with Puerto Rican salsa singer Victor Manuelle. In the second time in Venezuela, specifically in the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Maracaibo, where was a crowd of 15,000 people; they gave a recognition (Orchid Award) to Fernandez at "Orchid Festival" of "Chinita Fair". She also traveled to Cannes (France) on December 9, 2009, for the Five Star Diamond awards, with Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, and to Willemstad (Curacao) and Barquisimeto (Venezuela), as well, in early January, 2010, for the "Procesion de la Divina Pastora" (Procession of the Holy Shepherdess)[14]. Fernandez traveled to Puerto Rico on February 2010, to host Levantate, a Telemundo TV Show[15]; and back in New York she appeared in the Oprah Winfrey show[16]. In March, she travels to Moscow (Russia) and Prague (Czech Republic), where she crown the respective representatives of those countries for the Miss Universe 2010 pageant [17], and also fly to Colombia, Panama and to Puerto Rico again, for the Puerto Rico Open[18]. Stefania Fernandez is at 50 most beautiful of People en espanol[19]. As of May 2010, Stefania has traveled to Indonesia, Venezuela, Czech Republic, Russia, France, Curacao, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Brazil, Dominican Republic, India and Mexico.[
