Montevideo is the largest city, the capital, and the chief port of Uruguay. Montevideo is the only city in the country with a population over 1,000,000. Montevideo provides the highest quality of life in Latin America. Montevideo is situated in the south of the country.
Montevideo has a very rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers, artists, and musicians. Tango, candombe, and murga are the three main styles of music in this city. Montevideo enjoys a subtropical climate with mild and dry winters, hot and humid summers, agitated springs with numerous thunderstorms, and without tropical cyclones.
Salto is the second city of Uruguay.
The city is situated 496 km road northwest of Montevideo on the Uruguay River opposite the Argentine city of Concordia, Entre Rios.
One of the attractions that Salto has is thermal pools which are located close to the city. Salto is also known for its Calle Uruguay; in which locals stroll during weekend nights to socialize and have a drink with friends.
The city of Salto is the capital of the department, and its very picturesque city due to way it maintains a charming relaxing environment. Salto offers several other interesting things to do such as theatres, its squares and parks, its coastlines and its zoo. Those visitors who love animals should make sure of visiting this zoo, where they could meet several exotic and beautiful animals in a great environment.
Punta Del Este is an area known worldwide as a scenic resort area with miles of beautiful beaches, luxury hotels and restaurants, glittery nightlife and an upscale summer population. The city and resort appeal has attracted multiple governments to hold summit meetings there. Punta Del Este offers twenty miles of pristine beaches. It is located 140 km east of Montevideo.
Punta Del Este has scenic coasts and beaches. There are two types of coast: Brava and Mansa. This shows the end of the Rio de la Plata (River Plate) on one side and the beginning of the Atlantic Ocean, on the other side. There are quiet and calm water beaches while others have strong waves, white and fine sand or thick and golden ones. La Barra is popular for nautical sports and fishing. Other areas include El Tesoro, Montoya beach, Bikini beach, and Manantiales beach.
Punta Del Este is the Uruguay’s premiere beach resort.
At the beginning of XIX century Punta del Este was only a desert region visited for sailors and fishermen. Nowadays this coast city, known as the St Tropez of South America, attracts over 300.000 visitors per year.
Opposite the large peninsula separating the two waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Rio de la Plata, lie the enchanted islands of Isla Gorriti and Isla de los Lobos, inhabited by one of the world's largest sea-lion colonies
Las Piedras is a city located in southern Uruguay. It is situated in a wine growing district just north of Montevideo.
This city was the site of a decisive battle in Uruguay’s struggle for independence. In 1811 the revolutionaries defeated Spanish forces. Las Piedras name mean “The Stones”.
Las Piedras is among the largest cities in Uruguay. It is known for its ostrich farming and horse racing. Las Piedras is on the main highway and railroad linking Montevideo with Tacuarembo and Rivera.
Paysandu is a city located in the northwest of Uruguay.
It has a warmer and more humid climate that the rest of the country. Their economy is based on the agriculture, the cattle rising, and the forest exploitation. It possesses good communications via highway, rail, and fluvial transport.
Paysandu is known as “The Heroic One” as a result of the historical events that took place on its soil. Its main attractions include Guaviyu and Almiron hot spring resorts, those who enjoy health tourism. The quality of its waters, rich in minerals, turns these centers into ideal destinations for relaxation and rest.
