Tabare Ramon Vazquez Rosas (1940) is the current President of Uruguay. In the 2004 elections, he won 50.45% of the valid votes, eliminating the need for a runoff, and taking office in early 2005. He became the first Uruguayan president who did not belong to the so-called "traditional" parties, the National (Blanco) and Colorado parties.
A physician (oncologist) by training, he is a member of the centre-left Broad Front coalition.
With his own Frente Amplio holding a majority in Parliament, Vazquez was thought to have few obstacles to start with. He also has the support of the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, also a centre-leftist.
Jose Alberto Mujica Cordano, known as El Pepe, (1935) is a Uruguayan politician who is the Broad Front's candidate for the October 2009 presidential election.
On March 1, 2005, President Tabare Vazquez designated Mujica as the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries. Upon becoming minister Mujica resigned his position as Senator. He held this position until a cabinet change in 2008 when he resigned and was replaced by Ernesto Agazzi. Mujica then returned to his seat in the Senate.
The Extraordinary Congress on December 14, 2008, proclaimed Mujica as the official candidate of the Broad Front for primary elections of 2009, but four more precandidates were allowed to participate. On 28 June 2009, he won the primary elections and was thus nominated as the presidential candidate of the Broad Front for the 2009 general election. After that, Danilo Astori agreed to be the vice-presidential candidate of the coalition.
Luis Alberto Lacalle de Herrera (1941) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician who served as President of Uruguay from 1990 to 1995. He is currently the National Party candidate for President in the 2009 election.
Lacalle ran again for President in the 2004 elections, but the other Party leaders had gathered around a single opposing candidate, Jorge Larranaga, who defeated him in the primaries by a 2 to 1 margin. Lacalle is now leader of his Nationalist sector, Herrerismo, is part of the Party's Directorate, and is running for President again in 2009
