Landowner strike stops LNG project work

16.08.2010

Angry landowners have gone on strike and stopped construction work on Papua New Guinea's massive Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project. Strong Quake hits Papua New Giunea

20.08.2010

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck at 3:56am (1756 GMT Friday) at a depth of 51 kilometres (32 miles) with an epicentre 165 kilometres west-southwest of Arawa on Bougainville island, the US Geological Survey said. Papua New Guinea, which is beset by poverty despite rich mineral deposits, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. - Sapa-AFP
