Strong Quake hits Papua New Giunea
20.08.2010
A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck at 3:56am (1756 GMT Friday) at a depth of 51 kilometres (32 miles) with an epicentre 165 kilometres west-southwest of Arawa on Bougainville island, the US Geological Survey said.
Papua New Guinea, which is beset by poverty despite rich mineral deposits, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. - Sapa-AFP
